Chinese New Year festivities have begun, and our stomachs grumble for Chinese-inspired delicacies in synchrony with the drum rolls of the lion dancers that reverberate through the streets of downtown Sydney.

Kensington Street is welcoming the Year of the Rooster on Saturday 4 February, 3 - 8pm, with a delectable spread that will have you waddling away like a stuffed bird!

Follow us as we whet your appetite with a sneak peek into some of the offerings to feature in our street-wide smorgasbord this weekend at The Light of Dawn festival.

With fresh beginnings appropriately happening this month throughout our newest venue, The Old Rum Store, Kensington Street’s brand new restaurants are offering up some Chinese New Year delights for the occasion.

Whilst cuisines of Sicily, New York and Paris appear far flung from the Chinese palate, our chefs have some interesting fusions in mind to embrace the spirit of the festival into their finessed menus.

Chef Stanley Wong of Eastside Grill is endowed with 50% Cantonese heritage, and has spent much of his working career in Hong Kong’s finest restaurants. Chef Lino Sauro of Olio Kensington Street has called Singapore home for the last decade, where he heads up Gattopardo. And Bistrot Gavroche is certainly no stranger to the coveted Chinese bird, the coq.

Downstairs, new chickling in the block, Holy Duck!, will be amping up its humble homages to Chinese street food, with succulent duck sliders aplenty, and all of the trimmings.

Follow the bold and expressive Asian street art activation on the ground floor of the Old Rum Store, and meander up the stairs to discover a world of exciting dining options. Watch captivating street artists in action downstairs, and marvel at the beauty that these pieces could create in your living room or corporate space. Silent auction closes at 7pm.

Follow the sounds of sizzling past the funky decked-out Tuk Tuk and down into Spice Alley, where you can treat that niggling appetite to the best of the Asian food bowl.

Look out for old favourites Mekong and Hong Kong Diner, who are bringing their charcoal satay grills and yum cha carts onto the street for the day. Chef Tiw Rakarin will man his trolley filled with sweet Thai delights - Coconut Icecream and Sticky Mango Rice.

In the spirit of abundance and generosity Kensington Street is giving you the opportunity to receive gift vouchers to be used at all of Kensington Street’s renowned institutions during the Year of the Rooster.

With plenty of eye candy to gawk at, we invite you to share in the festive spirit and hashtag your best snaps on the day with #CNYonKensingtonSt.

We have prizes in abundance for the 6 most creative and captivating captures of the day. Hashtag your way to good fortune.

Look out for the eye catching 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art’s Rickshaw Tales rickshaw, decorated by contemporary Chinese artist Louise Zhang. Zhang’s lolly-esque globular painting style is evocative of Asian sweets riders.
