Chippendale’s cultural revolution continues as we witness Kensington Street transformed from uncut gem to dazzling diamond.

On Sunday 1 November from 11am to 6pm, this newly refurbished lifestyle hub will launch Kensington Street: Food, Alfresco Art & Design.

The alfresco showcase is a free event and will be presented by Fenella Kernebone; renowned Australian television and radio presenter, producer, interviewer and writer (Art Nation, Triple J & In Design, ABC).

Fenella’s impressive repertoire of working across multiple cultural disciplines deems her a most formidable ambassador for Kensington Street: Food, Alfresco Art & Design. As a trailblazer in the art and design sector, Fenella will be speaking at midday to launch the event - be sure not to miss it!

Charles Wilson - LOCAL DESIGN

Co-curated by the Chippendale Creative Precinct's (CCP) Kensington Contemporary and LOCAL DESIGN’s Tom Fereday and Emma Elizabeth, this showcase calls upon the luminary pulsars of Sydney’s art and design scene.

Jo Wood, Southern Ice Porcelain - Kensington Contemporary

Lee Mathers, Still Waters - Kensington Contemporary

Adam Rish, Atomic Chicken - Kensington Contemporary

In a unique curatorial approach that mirrors Kensington Street’s cutting-edge profile, Kensington Street: Food, Alfresco Art & Design will take place as a collaborative installation, forged at the hands of our esteemed contemporary artisans, distinguished galleries and creative institutions.

Such talents will produce an amalgam of three-dimensional works, in an upcycled modular landscape to span 50m of Kensington Street. This landscape is cultivated to an urban context, remaining highly conscious of Kensington Street’s idiosyncratic fusion of heritage houses and industrial framework.

It will be a panorama of skilled craftsmanship, of pieces handmade and high-end. The price tag on our artisans’ limited edition handiwork will fall anywhere between $100 to $2000.

An initiative proudly supported by Greencliff Realty and Kensington Street Holdings, we hope to draw national and international attention, growing this into a monthly affair with the potential to flourish into a major international art, design and food showcase.

Delights from the Kopi-Tiam on Spice Alley

True to its hawker nature, the Kopi-Tiam in Spice Alley offers delicious food specials with only the cheapest price tags and an invitation to BYO. Our restaurants, Alex Lee Kitchen, Old Jim Kee, Bang Luck Street Food and Hong Kong Diner, boast authentic Asian dishes from the hands of veteran chefs.

Have a look at the specials board this Sunday afternoon to cap off indulgence in art and design with the hottest food in Sydney's downtown, open all day! Pass into this flavor-laden alleyway after exploring the upcycled modular landscape on Kensington Street.

Alex Lee Kitchen plates up Singapore chill rice with prawns and kechap manis squid, while Old Jim Kee spins out a serving of clams in their sambal lala and garlic lala! Hit up Bang Luck for a stunning Thai spread - Tom Yum prawns, Tom Yum fried rice, stir fried cashew nuts and Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodles). From $1 fried chicken to Hong Kong Diner dumplings, everything under the lantern ceiling takes it easy on the purse strings. Nothing over $12, we guarantee you!

Spice Alley is cashless. Just tap your card, or visit the pay station to treat someone to a gift voucher, valid for all Kopi-Tiam eateries. Have a scroll through the #spicealley tag on Instagram for rave reviews and sweet snaps from our lovely diners.

Let's dine under the lanterns this Sunday!

Live music in Spice Alley

Music will also be woven into Sunday's creative tapestry! Browse handiwork from Sydney's greatest artisans to a soundscape of live performances from our roving buskers. Mellow vibes, lazy strolls and basking in the sun - our ears will be graced by a multitude of sounds, including David Sharp's soul classics and 50s hits while Hayden Buchanan cruises on slick jazz tunes from his debut EP, "Curated Nostalgic".

Kensington Street's heritage architecture will be livened with song as our musicians bring acoustics for all to waltz down the cobblestones!

This will coincide with Sydney Open, a city-wide Sydney Living Museums initiative to explore the history behind our most secretive buildings. Join architects Tim Greer and Paul Davies from 10am to 2pm as they peel back the layers of Kensington Street, revealing its colonial past, when rum stores, workers lodgings and stables lined what is now a rising lifestyle destination. What stories hide behind these terrace facades?

Kensington Street: Food, Alfresco Art & Design invites you to explore the eclectic urban lifestyle village that has grown within Chippendale.

Quench your thirst for bespoke, locally made goods while enjoying live music in a unique setting. Then, satiate your hunger at one of the authentic Asian street food vendors that comprise the Kopi-Tiam on Spice Alley.
