Spice Alley: Kensington Street

Kensington Street thanks everyone who joined us in celebrating Art at Night on Wednesday 16 March!

Evening showers fell in a soft rain timpani to our musicians CuZn and Dave Sharp, who drew crowds of thousands into our galleries, bars and restaurants, where festivities continued indoors over Spice Alley dishes and wine. Local graffiti legend Scott Marsh brought a new face to our street.

Now that autumn is creeping in, we have new plans in store. Here’s what’s on our seasonal mood board:

Nicole Kelly’s paintings of warm Bundanon, red wine botanicals on Bar Chinois wallpaper, robust noodle soups from Spice Alley, chai lattes from Glider, an April walking tour to circumnavigate our gallery precinct, and street busking at twilight.

This is our ode to autumn. The year shapeshifts and grows, as does life on Kensington Street.

Bar Chinois is where ex-Chip Off the Old Block Katya Ginsberg plays the salonniere to our street’s own Chinoiserie salon, assembling an all-week lineup to rival the gilded evenings of La Belle Epoque.

Break bread with Chippendale society on Croque Monsieur & Madame Monday.
Fold into Tokyo crepes with enoki mushroom and slice your knife through Creperie Tuesday.
Bite the Sticky Pork Belly Baguette on Baguette & Beer Wednesday.
Pick through a plate of Wine and Cheese Thursday.
Raise your glass on Chin Chin Friday.
Sip on Cafe Noir Saturday, cast in blue Parisian shadow and draped in velvet-smooth jazz.
Wake up with a Bloody Wasabi Mary on Lazy Mary Sunday before we rendezvous with Croque Monsieur once again.

Bar Chinois charms us like a smoky French chanteuse, and pens its mystery and noir in Chinese ink.

What day of the week is it? Come over to Bar Chinois and see what’s in store.

Grandpa Henri's Traditional Onion Soup. Pan-seared Kingfish with Capsicum Ragout - Photography by Chris Court

I was tingling with anticipation as my first course arrived at Bistrot Gavroche.  'Grandpa Henri's Traditional Onion Soup' sent me into a meltdown of delight.  I savored every spoonful of the traditional family recipe from chef Frederic Colin’s childhood, my mind conjuring images of the French countryside.

The soup was followed by pan-seared kingfish with capsicum ragout.  Growing up in a family of avid fishermen, and living off freshly caught seafood, the kingfish served at Bistrot Gavroche teleported me back to my coastal hometown.  I was swept away to this enchanting world where the divine taste and texture of perfectly cooked, ocean fresh fish, met with the warm and comforting reminder of home, and together they danced along the streets of Paris, glass of wine in hand.

My sensory journey concluded with Mousse au Chocolat Noir with cocoa nib nougatine. This dish was enlightening.  It was like tasting chocolate again for the very first time, like rediscovering a passionate love affair.

My evening at Bistrot Gavroche was an unforgettable experience, one that I still catch myself daydreaming about.  I cannot wait to return, excited to discover where the rest of the menu will take me.

NICOLE KELLY
GALLERY OPENING NIGHT
THURSDAY 7 APRIL 6-8PM

Of a golden time, Nicole Kelly

Nicole Kelly’s paintings are an impression of a golden time. These are the languid days past the outskirts of town, where solitary beasts graze on pastures that arch across the horizon. This is rural Australian land, the sunburnt country where dreamers dream.

Bundanon artist Arthur Boyd has often stated, “you can’t own a landscape” - but Kelly revisits the landscape rooted deep with her own memory, sifting these recollections through a filter of ochre and sunlight. She takes us with her. Red dust drifts from her reverie, and falls upon the spaces of Kensington Contemporary.

Following her Bundanon Trust Artist-in-Residence program, longtime NG Art Gallery artist Nicole Kelly has produced a series titled Desire and reason. Join us in Kensington Contemporary 1 & 2 from 6-8PM Thursday 7 April, when acclaimed National Art School artist Bill Brown opens the exhibition.

FIONA WHITE
FROM THURSDAY 5 MAY TO SUNDAY 29 MAY

Air Bus, Fiona White

The whimsical narratives of Fiona White parade into the white walls and heritage brickwork of Kensington Contemporary in early May.

Juxtapose ventures into a synthetic suburban realm, a land eroded from hyperbolic imagery and the vistas of childhood imagination, cultivated while we grew up in quiet suburbia. The gentleman in Air Bus leans in with a discerning gaze, to squint at his audience through charcoal lines. A suspended bus soars over mountains dripping like cookies and cream. It’s a playful juxtaposition of size that teases the possible collision of White’s characters, exploding in a mushroom cloud of acrylic colour.

Air Bus is one of six dream sequences that dance across White’s theatre of the absurd. Following Desire and reason, Juxtapose will run from Thursday 5 May to Sunday 29 May.
