With another prosperous year on Kensington Street to reminisce on, we proudly add another feather to our cap.

Without a moment’s rest, our team is eagerly working to get all of our chooks in a row for a radiant entrance into 2017.

You best grab your quill and mark in your diaries Saturday 4th of February, for what is set to be an extravagant Chinese New Year celebration to rule the roost.

Black Swan Dance

We welcome under our wings an abundance of fruitful partnerships with the China Cultural Centre Sydney, the Sichuan Department of Culture4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Australian Chinese Performing Artist's Association and City of Sydney, to bring you a thoroughly unique and cutting edge Chinese New Year celebration, full of light, radiance and vivacity.

Inspired by the personality and traits of the rooster, our street-wide celebration, entitled The Light of Dawn - Year of the Rooster, will celebrate renewal, regeneration and prosperity, in much abundance.

Join us from 3-8pm, when the creative contents of each of Kensington Street’s terraces will be spilling out into an undulating sea of vibrant delights, all paying homage to the wonderfully rich Chinese culture that resides in Sydney.

We will welcome a plethora of visual and performance artists to enliven the street with a Chinese twist, inspired by traditional fables associated with the rooster.

Black Swan Dance

As dancers gracefully leap down our cobbled street, they will be bound between immersive creative workshops and captivating demonstrations from cutting edge creatives and experts at the epicentre of the Chinese community, featuring live music deriving from China old and new, there will be something for everyone to rock to.

Soar with us as we give you a glimpse from a bird’s-eye view of our upcoming festival’s delights…

Be transported to a Chinese marketplace, a vibrant hub of scintillating culture, as you weave your way through buzzing Kensington Street and discover all manners of eclectic and fascinating stalls.

Discover the mystic world of fortune telling or observe our master caricature artists at work.

The attentive ambler may stumble upon award winning shadow puppeteer, Yi Pan who will be facilitating mini-shows, bringing this traditional Chinese folk art to our bustling bazaar.

Look out for the decadently festive rickshaw, adorned by Chinese Australian artist Louise Zhang, snaking its way from Haymarket to Chippendale, perching itself amidst the pulsating crowds on Kensington Street. Book yourself in for 4A’s ‘Rickshaw Tales’ to traverse the city’s culinary landscape.

Sugar Painting

Celebrate the new year by learning a brand new skill.

Immerse yourself in Chinese Lantern makingdough modellingcalligraphy and New Year painting workshops, and many more!

All of our wondrous workshops are run by local experts from the Sichuan Province, such as Qiang Zhang. Hailing from a family renowned for their intricate sugar paintings, he brings this ancient (and delicious) art form to Kensington Street.

Dancers at the BEAMS Arts Festival 2016

Kensington Street will be buzzing featuring an array of contemporary and traditional musical and dance performances.

Our exciting music and dance program includes performances from the ever popular Teo Chew Lion Dance Team alongside a wonderfully authentic martial arts display from Pak Hong Kung Fu International, to name but a few.

The rooster’s association with the new dawn is often interpreted as a symbol of unlocked potential. We at Kensington Street want to unlock your dance potential at our Silent Disco.

Discover moves you never knew you had as you shimmy and shake along to hopelessly catchy K-Pop and C-Pop tunes.

Whether you’re coming down to Kensington Street for a family adventure, or an outing with friends, you can rest assured that there will be a performance to suit your every need!

Chefs Gallery

Here on Kensington Street, we never pass up an opportunity to satiate your eyes and your stomachs. From mesmerising cooking demonstrations by Chefs Gallery, to a plethora of edible offerings by all of Kensington Street’s culinary minds, no doubt you’ll be waddling away like a stuffed bird.

We look forward to welcoming onto the street the delectable and thoroughly inspired offerings from newcomer Holy Duck!, as well as Bistrot Gavroche, Automata, Kensington Street Social, and many more.

As the proverbial break of dawn welcomes a Lunar Year full of new beginnings, Kensington Street takes the opportunity to launch two new restaurants.

As you weave through our vibrant street celebration, take a moment to discover two of Sydney’s most exciting new culinary destinations, as Eastside Grill and Olio Kensington Street open their doors to the public in the Old Rum Store.

Whilst Chefs Stanley Wong and Lino Sauro find their inspiration in Western culture, a little birdie has told us that they are weaving in carefully considered Chinese flavours for one night only!
