Chinese New Year 2017
Chinese New Year on Kensington Street
‘The Light of Dawn’
This year, on Saturday February 4, from 3 – 8pm, we will once again throw open the doors of our historic terraces and come together to celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rooster, in a truly #KensingtonStreet way – with a block party, of course!
We welcome under our wings an abundance of fruitful partnerships with the China Cultural Centre in Sydney, the Sichuan Department of Culture, Australian Chinese Performing Artists Association and City of Sydney, to bring you a thoroughly unique and cutting edge Chinese New Year celebration, full of light, radiance and vivacity.
Inspired by the personality and traits of the rooster, our street-wide celebration, entitled The Light of Dawn – Year of the Rooster, will celebrate renewal, regeneration and prosperity in abundance.
Here on Kensington Street, we never pass up an opportunity to satiate your eyes and your stomachs. From mesmerising dumpling-making demonstrations, to a plethora of edible offerings by all of Kensington Street’s culinary minds, no doubt you’ll be waddling away like a stuffed bird.
We look forward to welcoming onto the street the delectable and thoroughly inspired offerings from newcomer Holy Duck!, as well as Eastside Grill, Olio, Bistrot Gavroche, Kakawa Chocolates, and many more.
Once your cravings have been satiated, be transported to a Chinese marketplace, a vibrant hub of scintillating culture, as you weave your way through buzzing Kensington Street and discover all manners of eclectic and fascinating stalls. Discover the mystic world of fortune telling, observe our master caricaturist at work, or allow yourself to be transported to China’s simmering underbelly with a curated selection of silent Chinese film. Try your hand at the traditional arts of shadow puppetry, watch the mindful practice of calligraphy, and listen to your inner self as you slow into the practice of tai chi.
We welcome Sydney’s edgiest Asian and Australian street artists and muralists to express their talents live in the Old Rum Store in harmony with the bustling event on the Street. Watch the contemporary masters at work, and bid on their final products as they unfold and unfurl. The Silent Auction will close at 7pm.
These vibrant delights will be bookended between two stages. Featuring five hours of continuous live music deriving from China old and new, there will be something for everyone to rock to. We invite you to be wowed by the ever-popular Teo-Chew Lion Dance Team, shimmy and shake along to hopelessly catchy C-Pop and K-Pop tunes. Pop on your Silent Sounds headsets and bound to the beat of contemporary Chinese house music.
Whether you’re coming down to Kensington Street for a family adventure, or an outing with friends, you can rest assured that there will be a performance to suit your every desire.
From 3pm – 8pm, Saturday 4 February, embrace the wonderfully rich and pulsating Chinese culture that resides in Sydney.
